How do I announce an absence?

Login to CodingwithKids.com and go to your "Account" page linked on the top. Find and select your upcoming registration. This will open an expanded view with additional details for the class. Select "Announce Absence" - this will open a dialog allowing you to select which lesson(s) your student will be absent for.

Where is the meeting link for my online class?

The meeting link for your class can be found on the parent account page under your student's classes. Click "Account" in the upper right hand side of the screen. All current class information, including meeting links, will appear under "Current Registrations" for each student.

How do I use my credit?

When you log into your parent account, you will see your credit amount at the top right of the page. When you are ready to register for a new class, simply register as you normally would. When you reach the payment screen, you will have the option to apply the credit. If the price is higher than the credit amount, you will be asked to charge your card on file for the remaining balance.

Where do I find the Scratch or other student account login information?

All your student's current logins can be found in your parent account. To access your parent account, follow these steps: Go to https://gamezhuanqian.com In the upper right hand corner click "Login" (your login email is the email where you receive all communication from Coding with Kids). Click "Account" in the upper right hand side of the screen. Find your student's profile at the top of the page and select "My Logins" to see login information for your student's coding accounts. You can also find the logins specific to a class by clicking on your current registration and finding the "Coding Accounts Login" section in the expanded view.

When does the season end?

I need to change my contact email address. How can I do it?

You can update any of your information or your student's information in your parent account. To access your parent account, follow these steps: Go to https://gamezhuanqian.com In the upper right hand corner click "Login" (your login email is the email where you receive all communication from Coding with Kids). Click "Account" in the upper right hand side of the screen. Select "Update Profile" to view your account details. On this page, you will be able to change your profile information, including contact details and emergency contact for your child.

My student would like to join a class with their friends. How can they be in the same class?

Please contact us here: /contact with the class name, class time, time zone and number of kids. Once we have the information, we can send a special link so everyone can be registered in the same class! If you have already registered and want to ensure that the kids stay together, please reach out as well.

What are technical requirements for your online classes?

Accepted Answer

Our technical recommendations for all our programs are: Computer: PC (Windows 10 or later), Mac (OS X 10.14 Mojave or later), or Chromebook with a built-in webcam. We recommend a device with at least 8 GB of RAM for the best experience. Should there be any additional technical requirements for a specific camp, they will be communicated to you. Tablets and smartphones are not supported for coding — students will need a laptop or desktop computer to participate comfortably. Having a second screen (a monitor or even a tablet) is recommended so students can view the instructor while coding. Internet: Broadband internet with at least 1.2Mbps download and 600Kbps upload speeds. Webcam: Built-in or external webcam (most laptops already include one). Microphone and Speakers: Headphones with a built-in microphone are recommended, but any microphone and speakers will work in a quiet room.

How do I know which Minecraft version I need?

Minecraft: Java Edition: This is the version required for our Minecraft programs for ages 8-12 and 12+ in camp and online private programs. It runs on Windows or Mac laptops and desktop computers (not Chromebooks). Minecraft Education Edition: This is the version primarily used for our Minecraft program for ages 5-7 (camps and afterschool) and students aged 8-12 in the afterschool Minecraft courses. It runs on Chromebooks, Windows, or Mac laptops and desktop computers. If you're unsure which Minecraft version you need, please check the specific requirements in the course description you're interested in. How do I know which Minecraft I have?

Students must have the correct Minecraft version to participate in the course they are enrolled in. If you already have Minecraft on your computer, here's how to check which version you have: Launch Minecraft on your computer. If you see "Minecraft Education" text, you have the Minecraft Education Edition. If you see "Minecraft: Java Edition" text, you have Minecraft Java Edition.

Can my student use a Chromebook? iPad?

A chromebook works for our Little Coders and Scratch classes for 8-12 year old students as long as it has a built-in webcam, 2GHz processor, and 2GB of RAM. We do not recommend that students use tablets for any of our classes. They are generally not powerful enough for anything beyond basic coding, and switching between apps can make it difficult for students to follow along.

I am having issues with Zoom. What can I do?

Audio Problems: Check your audio settings: Ensure your microphone is selected and not muted. I am having internet issues. What can I do?

We have a few tips that might help you out! Check your internet connection by using a test like speedtest.net (http://speedtest.net). You need at least a 1.2 Mbps connection for Zoom. If that fails, try to restart your computer. If that fails, try to restart your router and/or modem. If these steps fail, we recommend you contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Where should my student start in Coder's Ladder®?

If your student does not have experience in coding: Ages 5-7 should start with Little Coders. Ages 8-10 should start with Level 1. Ages 11-14 should start with Level M. Ages 14+ should start with H1. If your student doesn't have coding experience, please start them in the classes suggested above. If your student does have coding experience, please read the description of each level (https://gamezhuanqian.com/coders-ladder-group-classes) to self-assess the correct level. New students will join a Welcome Session in the weekend before the first class to be introduced to their Coder's Ladder® level. During this session, if we find that a different level would be more appropriate for your student's skills, our team will work with you to switch your registration.

Do you have placement exams?

We do not have a placement exam. If your student does have experience, please read the description of each level (https://gamezhuanqian.com/coders-ladder-group-classes) to self-assess the correct level. New students will join a Welcome Session in the weekend before the first class to be introduced to their Coder's Ladder® level. During this session, if we find that a different level would be more appropriate for your student's skills, our team will work with you to switch your registration.

Do you have trial classes?

We do not offer a free trial class due to the extensive nature of creating our student accounts and the desire to create a full experience for students, but we do have a money back guarantee for our Coder's Ladder® classes. New students must attend a 2.5 hour Welcome Session (1 hour for Little Coders) where an instructor will assess their abilities, they will become familiar with the platform and program, and they will create a few small projects. While we are confident that all students will love their experience, if your student attends their Welcome Session and their first regular class and does not enjoy it, we will refund the full amount paid for the remaining classes.

Will the class be starting when my student is joining? Is everyone new?

Because our classes run continuously, your student will be joining a current class with students at a variety of experiences within the level. The instructor covers topics that are new for most students and gives more advanced students new challenges when they review previous topics. This allows new students to join any class at any time and graduate to the next level whenever they are individually ready.

What do I do if we can't attend a Welcome Session?

Welcome Sessions happen on Saturdays and Sundays as they are longer than a typical class. For Welcome Sessions, please make every effort to attend. It helps your child get set up with the technology and have a sense of what will be covered in the level. Welcome Sessions allow students to seamlessly enter into a new class. If you cannot make it to a Welcome Session, please email info@codingwithkids.com as soon as possible.

If we took a break, does my student need to attend a Welcome Session?

If you took a break of less than 3 months, your student can hop back into classes without a Welcome Session. If it has been longer than that, we find that students do better with a refresher to help ease the transition back into class! Why is my student's season only 4 weeks or 7 weeks long, instead of the usual 8?

Accepted Answer

We allow students to register for ongoing Coder's Ladder® classes at any time. However, all customers are billed on the same 8 week cycle so if you sign up in the middle of the cycle, you will only see and pay for the sessions left in the cycle. Holidays sometimes also result in a shortened season and our three summer seasons run for 4 weeks each. If you are new to a level, the first session will be a welcome session that appears as a separate class.

My student missed an online group session. How can we make it up?

Accepted Answer

You are allotted one makeup session per billing cycle. To use the makeup session, you must notify us at least 2 hours in advance of the absence (exceptions may be made for illnesses or emergencies). Makeup sessions are 30-minute “Office Hours” sessions led by one of our experienced instructors and may include up to 2 other students. Please note that the Office Hour instructor may be different from your student’s regular class instructor. For a small fee, each student may also book up to 2 additional Office Hours sessions during the season. To avail of the FREE Office Hour, you must report the absence at least 2 hours before class and schedule the Office Hours directly from your parent account, as shown in the picture below. If you do not see Office Hours as an option, please contact info@codingwithkids.com.

Question 23

My student missed an online private session. How can we make it up?

Accepted Answer

Session-by-Session subscriptions: We offer one session credit for a missed session per billing period. (no makeup sessions) 24 hours advance notice is required for the absence. To receive credit, please enter the absence through your parent account. We will not provide credit for more than one missed session per billing period. If your instructor cancels a session, we'll take care of rescheduling for you. Annual subscriptions: Once per season, with at least 24 hours advance notice, we will work with you to schedule a makeup session during your subscription period. If you prefer a credit, we can do that as well. If your instructor cancels a session, we'll take care of rescheduling for you.

How often will my card be charged?

One week before the next season's class starts, you will automatically be charged for the next season. If you would like to turn off your subscription so that you don't automatically renew, you can do so at any time from your account page.

Question 25

How can I change my student's day and/or time for their Coder's Ladder® class?

Accepted Answer

Group classes: On your account page, you can view a list of alternate class options for your student. First, click on your student's current class, and then click on "Change Continuation Session" in the dropdown menu. You will see a list of other classes that would be a fit for your student. These classes have students enrolled with a similar amount of experience in the Coder's Ladder level as your child. Choose the class that best fits your scheduling needs and follow the prompts to make the change. If you do not see an option that works for you, please reach out to info@codingwithkids.com with a few time options that work best for you. To provide instructional consistency, we limit schedule changes for group classes to weeks 1 and 5 of each season. The soonest week that the change can be made will be visible in the list of appropriate classes for your student. Private classes: Please reach out to us at info@codingwithkids.com with several time and day options that work best for your student's schedule.

How do I cancel my classes?

Classes already in progress are not eligible for cancellation. You can cancel your upcoming season enrollment through your account page using the steps below: Log in to https://www.codingwithkids.com. Click on the "Account" page linked on the top. Select "Billing Information" on your account page. Find the "My Subscriptions" section. Here you will find details for your recurring payments for Coder's Ladder classes. Select "Cancel Subscription" to stop any future payments. Note: By canceling your classes, you will remove your reservation in the next billing cycle and will not be enrolled for any additional classes! When you decide to rejoin the classes in the future, you will need to register again.

Can you please give me more details on my student's progress?

The best way to get more information on your student's progress is to review the progress in your parent account. After logging in, select the student and scroll down to see their progress in both concepts and projects. For more specific questions, we would also recommend joining the session during the last 5-10 minutes to ask questions. Your student's instructor will regularly send student progress reports. These reports are also available in your account.

When will my student graduate from their level?

Accepted Answer

Students will be recommended for graduation by their instructor when they reach at least 90% mastery of concepts and at least 90% of project types completed in the level. Note: If a student's projects say 100%, that does not typically mean that they did every single project; we have more projects than are required for graduation, so if students need reinforcement on topics we have many options!

How long do students stay in a Coder's Ladder® level?

Each level is designed to take about one year to complete. There are some small variations; a few levels take less time (L1 for example) and a few take a bit longer (L3, LM, LH1 for example). Please, watch the progress of your student in your account and you will have a sense how quickly the student is progressing towards level completion.

How can my student graduate to the next Coder's Ladder® level?

Once students have completed the required concepts and projects in a level, their instructor will recommend them for graduation. They will then need to pass the graduation exam for their level to move to the next level. Your student's instructor can help guide you in what is needed to graduate.

How do we take the graduation exam?

Accepted Answer

Registering for graduation: Once your student has been recommended for graduation by their instructor, you will receive an email to register for graduation, along with the next level's Welcome Session and class. Graduation celebration session: During the graduation time, your student will attend the session and the instructor will explain all the steps of the exam. Graduations should be fun, so if at any point your student has a question, please encourage them to ask. (Students in Little Coders do not need to take a graduation exam.) Take home portion: The instructor at the graduation exam will introduce the take home portion of the exam, so your student is prepared to do that on their own. Students should complete the take home portion within 24 hours of the exam. (Students in Level 1 do not engage in a take home portion of the exam.) My student took the graduation exam. What do I do now?

After your student takes the online portion of the graduation exam and completes the take-home portion, the exam is graded. If your student passes, they will get an email with their certificate. The payment for the previous level will be automatically transferred to the new level with the Welcome Session and class times that were selected upon registering for graduation. Please note, there is no need to cancel your previous level subscription, as it will be automatically transitioned upon passing the graduation exam. If your student does not pass, they will be able to try again at the end of the following season! They will automatically go back to their level and class from before the graduation exam. This will give your student a chance to improve their skills to do better the next time!

What do I do if we can't attend the graduation exam?

Graduations happen on Saturdays and Sundays, once a month. Upon being approved to take the graduation exam, you will be prompted to register for graduation, the Welcome Session, and the next level class. If you are unable to attend a graduation weekend, we have graduation cycles every four weeks, so you can register for the next round.

Do you have in-person classes?

How do I change my registration for an in-person class?

Log into CodingwithKids.com and go to your "Account" page linked on the top. Find and select your upcoming registration. This will open an expanded view with additional details for the class. Select "Change registration." This will cancel your current registration and apply your payment as a credit in your account. Select your new class and proceed with the registration steps. Your credit will be applied to your registration during the payment step.
